The future trajectory of the Xbox ecosystem appears to be set at this point. The primary drivers of this "Xbox OS" (basically PC with console-like front-end) evolution will be an ecosystem allowing other stores, Xbox Game Pass and Play Anywhere. Existing Xbox console libraries will be accessible through emulation, or at least that's what they are aiming for, in full or at least in limited scope. Microsoft will manufacture its own hardware running Xbox OS, while other manufacturers will also be able to create "Xbox OS" devices. All these devices are now "an Xbox". New games will likely be tailored to different specifications with profiles etc., but porting won't be so much of a problem anymore (essentially PC version) -- which guarantees third-party support.

As long as they get my library onto this Xbox/PC hybrid via a combination of Play Anywhere & Emulation, I will have almost zero concerns. I'm all in if this is what the hybrid is like and it's encouraging they're heavily hiring for their emulation team for what appears to be this exact purpose. The only complication remaining being licenses but I'm sure $ can fix that.

Makes me wonder how best we should track hardware sales for the future of Xbox. Like just about everyone else we combined Xbox Series X and Series S together. It comes down to what sales data we are able to track. Does NPD/Circana combine the dedicated Xbox console and handheld together or do they keep them separate.
