Hundreds of thousands of families have been relying on the daily meals received from the WFP and community kitchens across Gaza. It’s hard to imagine how this large number of people – already displaced and traumatised with scars of war – are going to get by in the coming days.
People are hungry. They’re already rationing supplies. It’s not just the organisations, it’s also families running out of supplies. They don’t have any necessities.
Close to 450,000 newly displaced people are on the verge of famine due to the lack of food. Fifty-three days now – that’s how long the Israeli blockade has been going on, with zero entry of food, medicine, water or fuel to keep bakeries and other vital facilities running.
Dozens of recent deaths in Gaza attributed to hunger
Gaza’s Government Media Office suggests that 52 people who have died over the past few weeks was due to hunger and malnutrition. That is a clear outcome of this ongoing closure of Gaza’s borders.
Many families have been lining up at the gates of community kitchens for very long hours, every single morning, and many of them return with nothing.
‘My children are eating one meal a day’
Tahreer Abu Ajawa, a displaced Palestinian mother of seven, has spoken to Al Jazeera about the dire conditions in Gaza.
“I am a mother of seven. I am also taking care of my mum, who is disabled. Our situation has been very difficult for the past 50 days. I have a few items stored, but they ran out. As a mother with seven, I suffer from starvation. The children are here and they want to eat.
“My children are eating one meal a day. This is affecting their health. They will get sick. My son was in bed yesterday, and I could not do anything. No food, no water, and no medicine.
“A bag of flour is about $100 to $150. Where am I supposed to get that from?”
UNRWA says nearly 3,000 aid trucks ready to enter Gaza but blocked
The UN agency for Palestinian refugees says “the situation is desperate” in Gaza as a result of Israel’s blockade. “Humanitarian aid is being used as a bargaining chip and a weapon of war,” UNRWA said.
Nearly 3,000 UNRWA trucks of lifesaving aid are ready to enter #Gaza. But the siege imposed by the Israeli authorities has been blocking the entry of supplies for over 50 days now.
The people in #Gaza are hungry and the situation is desperate.
