Israeli military carries out more strikes on southern Lebanon
Earlier, we reported that Israeli fighter jets had bombed the town of Naqoura in southern Lebanon.
Lebanon’s National News Agency now reports that the Israeli military has carried out more attacks on Naqoura, including a strike on a home in the centre of the town, and a second on the town’s outskirts.
US senators threaten aid to Lebanese army
Two top members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee accuse the Lebanese army of being “too slow” in implementing its commitments under the November ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.
Senators Jim Risch and Jeanne Shaheen, a Republican and Democrat, respectively, urged the army to speed up its deployment to southern Lebanon, which it is obligated to do under the terms of the ceasefire. Doing so is to make it the only armed force in southern Lebanon.
“Any [Lebanese army] hesitancy … would force the US to re-evaluate its approach” to funding, the senators said, as reported by Al Arabiya. The US is by far the biggest funder of Lebanon’s army, which the US sees as the only group capable of counterbalancing the security capabilities of the paramilitary Hezbollah.
