The devs have already stated they wish for the fans of the OG to feel like they’re experiencing the story again for the first time. They’re doing their best to subvert expectations and keep players on their toes, yet after two games the story hasn’t diverted at all.

The story hasnt diverted?

What are the whsipers (Arbiters of Fate)?

Why do Cloud have visions of events that happen later in the game?

Spoiler!
How and why did Biggs survive in Remake's crucial event in Sector 7 when he died originally in the OG during the same said event?

Does none of this divert the story at all?

Edit: Hell the beginning of the game diverted the story from the original when it was shown it was Shinra themselves that destroyed the reactor when Avalanche's bomb failed to destroy it. (In the OG Avalanche's bomb destroyed the reactor).

Spoiler!

The whispers are obviously part of the planet in some capacity, considering what is shown during Tifa’s time in the lifestream.

Biggs did not survive. He’s in the lifestream.

Cloud having vision about the future? Like what? About Aerith’s fate when he tries to get away from her in the slums? That’s most likely linked to the unique powers of the Cetra. Same way Aerith has visions of possible futures via her ability to “hear the planet/lifestream”, which Sephiroth also has, being that he is currently absorbing it all at the northern crater.
