My main beef with the plot is that it makes zero sense for a Sephiroth who knows/comes from the future to kill Aerith. That's the one thing that brought about his downfall since Holy isn't strong enough.
So in the end we had an "Unknown Journey" that was 99% like the original journey just because.
I also fully expect the other timelines to be just some dream of the lifestream nonsense and begone without a trace by the end of the trilogy (which will be exactly like the end of FFVII for reasons, again).
