According to an article in the Haaretz newspaper by a senior officer in a non-reservist brigade, Palestinians are “regularly forced by soldiers to enter houses in Gaza to make sure there are no terrorists or explosives”.
“In Gaza, human shields are used by Israeli soldiers at least six times a day,” the officer said in the article.
The officer said that he served in Gaza for nine months, and first came across these procedures, called “mosquito protocol”, in December 2023. According to the officer, the protocol was used long before there was a shortage of dogs from the army’s canine unit, Oketz, which were used for this purpose.
The officer said: “This became the insane, unofficial excuse for this insane, unofficial procedure.”
The writer added that the army personnel referred to “human shields” as “shawishes”.
The officer stressed: “Today, almost every platoon keeps a ‘shawish’, and no infantry force enters a house before a ‘shawish’ clears it. This means there are four ‘shawishes’ in a company, twelve in a battalion, and at least 36 in a brigade. We operate a sub-army of slaves.”
France’s Macron calls on Netanyahu to end Gaza strikes
French President Emmanuel Macron says he also asked the Israeli prime minister to return to the ceasefire deal. “I emphasized that humanitarian aid must resume immediately,” Macron wrote in a lengthy social media post.
He also said he urged Israel to respect the ceasefire in Lebanon.
“Regarding Lebanon, after my discussions with the Lebanese President on Friday and this conversation with the Israeli Prime Minister, we have decided to work together,” Macron said.
“The monitoring mechanism must be strengthened to fully restore Lebanon’s sovereignty. This includes a complete withdrawal of Israel from Lebanese territory and support in order to restore the state’s monopoly on arms.”
I just spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin @Netanyahu.
The release of all hostages and Israel’s security are a priority for France.
I called on the Israeli Prime Minister to end the strikes on Gaza and to return to the ceasefire, which Hamas must accept.…
