See? That's the problem in your assessment. You (and seemingly MS) are assuming that the 30+ million people who bought an Xbox series will just buy anything Xbox no matter what; and well, I think you (and MS) are in for a wake up call.. |
Indeed. I bought one on the promise of Halo, Forza, Starfield. All 3 disappointed and could be played on PC anyway. My Series X has become my least played console of all time, so why would I buy another one when there will be no exclusives for it anyway.
Yeah, MS will find out exclusives matter. They are already finding out but have little choice as Gamepass has stagnated.
But they also know they need to keep some presence in game stores to not be forgotten entirely. They need another SKU and (some) games on shelves with the window advertising around it. Shelf space for XBox has already shrunk a lot, a situation where there's only some controllers to buy for XBox in stores will only hasten the decline now GP isn't following Netflix's success.
MS banked on streaming to take off a lot faster than it does. Yes internet connections are getting faster, however reality is, demand is still rising faster. Internet stability is the biggest hurdle for streaming and not easily solved. With multiple people in the house streaming video, streaming games on top only works if you have the best internet and don't live far from a server. And still playing local is much better quality with lower input lag.
So another XBox feels mostly like buying more time for streaming to get better / more popular. At least keep the diehard XBox fans engaged and have a box on the market for those that don't want to mess with PC nor streaming, another GamePass box like Series S.
