I couldn't let what he really said about the democracies in Europe and Germany go unchallenged. There is no freedom of opinion here, minority opinions are suppressed - I couldn't possibly let that go unchallenged. Friends have to put up with one side expressing criticism that is wrong and the other side then countering it
It was a speech that I hadn't expected in this way, and one that didn't really fit in, to put it bluntly. It is the Munich Security Conference. He said little about Ukraine, Russia, the threats we are facing, and little about the security and defense policy of NATO and Europe. I would have liked more. That didn't happen. I would also like to ask him why he did this other part. It was neither necessary nor helpful. And that's why we should quickly get back to the agenda or, rather, back to work.
But it must be clear, no matter what is negotiated there: It was certainly not a smart move to take the issue of Ukraine's NATO membership off the table before the negotiations - nor the issue of territorial changes. You don't do that, it's not smart. Especially as Putin is now getting two things that were particularly important to him before the war began. Now he's getting them for nothing. That is a mistake.
It cannot be in our European interest, nor in the American interest, for Putin to emerge victorious from this war, which he started in violation of international law, or even to claim that he is the victor. That would increase Putin's influence in Europe and the threat potential at the same time - and the Americans would then lose influence. That cannot be in their interests.

US Vice President J.D. Vance met with AfD leader Alice Weidel in the afternoon after his speech at the Munich Security Conference. They spoke for about 30 minutes. About the Ukraine war & German domestic politics - including firewall.
He didn't meet with Scholz but did meet with the Nazi Party that is pro-Russia.
