You can't win a war via sanctions alone, Russia's economy is doomed either way so the threat of further sanctions is hardly going to move Putin, the only thing that will is military force. Lets wait and see a few months, I can easily imagine a scenario where Trump is using these recent sanction comments to look "tough" and then turning around a few months from now and saying that Ukraine is the one being unreasonable and pulling support, that way he looks like he actually did something in terms of standing up to Russia but makes an excuse later to throw Ukraine under the bus. The threat of further sanctions is welcome but will not scare Russia out of the war.

This is quite correct, as the Russians seem to be ok with hardship and even death sometimes.

The Russians will never turn against Putin, I'm convinced of that now, they'll always march to their deaths, nobody is coming to liberate Russia, nobody is overthrowing Putin, a lot of Russians agree with Putin and a lot simply don't care, a lot of Russia's mindset is fighting for the motherland is a glorious purpose no matter what the reason is. Russia needs a complete reset like Nazi Germany after WW2 but that would require total defeat and a foreign nation forcefully occupying them, not happening. Even when Putin dies, the next person will likely be just as bloodthirsty, Russia has not changed since WW2 and I don't see them changing anytime in my lifetime. Putin will continue throwing his massive amount of bodies at the frontline and the Russians will continue to accept it.
