Main events from Januari 4th
- Israeli forces killed at least 66 Palestinians across Gaza on Saturday, medics say, including in strikes on homes and a refugee camp. The Palestinian Civil Defence says there were at least 30 separate attacks across the enclave in the past day.
- Hamas released a recently recorded video showing Israeli captive Liri Albag, as families of those held in Gaza took to the streets of Israeli cities demanding a truce deal.
- US President Joe Biden notified Congress of a plan to send $8bn worth of weapons to Israel, including bombs, Hellfire missiles, artillery rounds and attack helicopters.
- Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem says the Lebanese armed group is ready to respond to repeated Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreed on last month, as the UN’s peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) accuses Israel of actions that jeopardise the truce.
- The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate says Israeli forces killed at least 10 media workers in the Gaza Strip in December, including 10 reporters with Al Quds Today who were killed in an attack on a live broadcast vehicle.
- The chief of the World Health Organization (WHO) says he has received no updates on the safety and wellbeing of Dr Hussam Abu Safia, the director of Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital, since his arrest by Israeli forces on December 27.
Israeli forces kill 70 Palestinians across Gaza
The Reuters news agency, citing medics and witnesses, reported that at least 17 of the victims were killed in Israeli air attacks on Gaza City in the north of the Strip.
Here’s some details:
- At least 11 members of the same family were killed in Israel’s attack on the al-Ghoul family home in Gaza City, the Civil Defence agency said. They included seven children.
- At least five people were killed in the second Israeli attack on Gaza City, with rescuers saying at least 10 others are feared trapped under the rubble.
- Five Palestinians were killed and more wounded in an Israeli attack on a group of people in the Jabalia refugee camp, also in the north.
- Israeli forces also bombed a vehicle in southern Khan Younis, killing six Palestinian security guards working to provide humanitarian aid.
