Could be many reasons, but I'm guessing for most of them creative freedom is on top of the list - modern AAA games have, for the most part, become design by committee commercial products, not something that is made by OG gamer-developers who were in it for the love of games, so no wonder many of them decide to go independent and try to succeed in their vision or (metaphorically) die trying.
