- At least three Palestinian babies sheltering in flimsy tents in southern Khan Younis have died of hypothermia in the past two days as temperatures plummet across the Gaza Strip, according to doctors.
- The deaths come as Israeli forces continue to blockade Gaza and batter the Strip with attacks from the air, ground and sea. At least five Palestinians are killed in the latest Israeli assault on a residential building in northern Gaza City.
- In the occupied West Bank, Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian man in the town of Qaffin, north of the Tulkarem refugee camp, bringing the death toll in the area to nine since launching a military operation on Tuesday morning.
- Israel and Hamas accused each other of presenting new obstacles to a ceasefire deal, as the Israeli defence minister reportedly tells troops in Gaza that the country’s military will continue to maintain security control in the war-torn enclave.
- Yemen’s Houthis claim an attack on Israel’s Ashkelon as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a warning to the rebels during a Hanukkah celebration, saying the group “will also learn what Hamas, Hezbollah, the Assad regime and others have learned”.
- Pope Francis denounces the “extremely grave” humanitarian situation in Gaza and appeals for the release of the Israeli captives held by Hamas in his traditional Christmas address at the Vatican.

A newborn baby died from the cold in a tent encampment in Al-Mawasi, in southern Gaza, a health official said Wednesday, highlighting the stark challenges to survival faced by Palestinian children displaced from their homes amid Israel’s ongoing assault on the strip.
Sela Mahmoud Al-Fasih “froze to death from the extreme cold” in Al-Mawasi, Dr. Munir Al-Bursh, the director general of the Ministry of Health in Gaza, posted on X on Wednesday.
In the past 48 hours, Sela and at least two other infants – a three-day-old and a one-month-old – have died there from low temperatures and a lack of access to warm shelter, Dr. Ahmed Al-Farra, the head of pediatrics and obstetrics at Nasser Hospital, in Khan Younis, told CNN.
