The same issue exists there. Most US politicians are (subjectively) right wing. 

Democrats tend to be more left wing than Republicans, and they tend to be more libertarian than Republicans.

Because left-wing vs. right-wing has been a comparison that has existed for ages.  I have never heard of a comparison between Auth's vs. Libert's

It's funny that Ron Paul's name has come up. He was in the Libertarian party before he switched to being a Republican.

Also, Republicans have more in common with Libertarians than Democrats do. 

Lastly, yes, Democrats are more likely to be left-wing than Republicans.  But, they are also more likely to be  pro-socialist than Republicans, whereas Republicans are more likely to be Libertarian than Socialist.

EDIT: A better comparison would be Socialist vs. Libertarian.
