"Third genders" are thousands of years old. A lot of the terminology is new in English, but there are tons of cultures that have recognized more genders than 2.
The Bugis in Indonesia have recognized 5 genders for hundreds of years.
It's mostly only been in the past century, that there has been any pushback against that idea.
There are a lot of writings that Ancient Egypt (4000 years ago), had 3 genders.
