There's also the issue of confidence..Being good looking typically makes people more confident and consequently someone being good looking makes us assume they have self-confidence.
Thus attractive characters give impression of confidence which is a heroic and admirable quality (and itself attractive).
That's the real difference why I (and I believe most others) like old Lara Croft more than new. She was a badass.
Although that gets me started on another matter: realism vs epic heroism.
Not only in games but also movies and TV series there's been a trend of moving towards realism. The Batman was the most realistic version of Batman - and IMO as such most boring.
This aim for realism is often what leads to less attractive characters as, let's face it, exaggerated features are attractive and sexy. It also means more serious storytelling and less plain fun. Oppositely when a game is more fun entertainment, you'll enjoy more about characters being attractive.
