I don't want to imply anything, but he clearly hasn't cared about his allies after attacking Ukraine. On the other hand, he's been great at utilizing his allies. |
Generally true but Syria is pretty important to Russia strategically, they've got a few Russian bases there which supply their African operations and the important Tartus naval facility and without it, Russia/Wagner in Africa is a lot harder to supply. Plus Assad has been the poster boy of how Russia protects their sicko allies, even despite most of the West wanting him dead, I think Assad collapsing would be a worse look than America's messy pull out of Afghanistan, if Syria did collapse it would send a very strong message to anyone under Russia's thumb, now is the time to strike.
Then there's also that Türkiye and Russia have been having a proxy war with each other in Syria for years now which Russia doesn't want Türkiye to win. Though Türkiye also supplies and funds group that we in the West don't like either and that's been a big disagreement between us. Overall Assad collapsing would be a pretty major blow to Russia but we'll have to wait and see, the situation keeps rapidly changing and Assad is no stranger to using any means at his disposal to put down rebellions even if it means slaughtering his own civilians.
