Attractive characters improve games. True or false?

As someone who have never spent a single penny on a cosmetic for a game and usually spend less than 5 min in a char creators it mostly unimportant to me. Overall artistic style of the game matter to me and in that sense the chars looks should make sense within the style they chose for the game but other then that mostly irrelevant to me.

Gameplay is king and when graphics impress me it mostly when looking at the world and scale. A lot of times when graphics wow me in past there not been a single char on the screen.
