FF7 is important game for many reasons, but not the most important RPG in (video) gaming - that title goes to Ultima (and to some extent Wizardry, but its influence is more important for JRPGs).

I honestly think if we turned back the clock and restarted gaming from the 1980s, almost every gameplay and industry idea would have reappeared sooner or later because most of them are quite obvious or emergent and don't require many steps to find. It's just like convergent evolution in that regard, if it works it works.

It's fair to give the most credit to whoever implemented a given idea and found the most success, not who just happened to be first. Of course, though, you do you.

It probably would - Ultima was not the first to try to be VG D&D counterpart (although without the license, so not carbon copy of it).

What many younger people, or those who just don't know much about RPGs outside of JRPGs, is how influential Ultima was (and still is) - and I don't blame them, since JRPGs were first contact with RPGs for many.
