As a longtime Obsidian fan, I was actually really surprised when I saw the tone in the initial teaser because it was so drastically darker and grittier than Obsidian's previous games. Before, they were certainly serious settings, but the presentation was always a bit more lighthearted in nature. When they showed the rebooted version of Avowed, I immediately felt that looked more like a traditional Obsidian game lol.
It would've been really interesting to see their take on an Elder Scrolls game, but that may have been putting too much pressure on the studio. Especially since they're not that big of a studio and they would've been trying to tackle a style of game that is now so immediately recognizable considering Skyrim alone is one of the best selling games ever, that they kinda would've been setting themselves up for failure.
Hell, Avowed may still run into some of those issues because a couple of previews today are still trying to claim it's Obsidian take on Elder Scrolls 
the game isn't even open world to begin with. I'm really looking forward to it regardless though. The more I see of it, the more excited I get! Biggest issue I'm gonna have is balancing playtime between Avowed and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 lol
