Reviews are based on the performance issues on the games pre-patch. The day 1 patch seems to have alleviated a lot of the issues reviewers were noticing. But, there's nothing they can do about when GSC didn't provide the most up to date build of the game.

It's agreed on that there's a great game there even before the day 1 patch. BUT, it's a hardcore FPS. Expect to die a LOT.
