Israeli police use skunk water, tough measures against protesters

Israeli police have used skunk water and other extreme measures to disperse protesters demonstrating against the dismissal of Defence Minister Yoav Gallant by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli media reports.

There have been increasing disagreements between the right-wing government and the military, with the latter favouring reaching a deal that would stop Israel’s assault on Gaza and bring Israeli captives home.

Protesters have blocked a major highway in Tel Aviv and set off fireworks on the roads. Police have also reportedly removed protesters near Netanyahu’s residence in Jerusalem.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Netanyahu sacked Defence Minister Gallant, appointing former Foreign Minister Israel Katz in his place.

About 40 arrested as Israeli police break up Tel Aviv protests

As we have been reporting, Israeli police used skunk water and other violent measures to disperse crowds of demonstrators protesting in Tel Aviv against Netanyahu’s sacking of Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.

Police have removed protesters who were blocking the major Ayalon Highway in Tel Aviv and setting off fireworks. About 40 people have been arrested, according to Israel’s Haaretz newspaper.

“Everyone here is causing trouble, everyone is being arrested, load the bus,” a police officer said at the scene, according to Haaretz.

Footage shows protesters gathering near Netanyahu’s Jerusalem home

As we previously reported, Israeli police have removed protesters demonstrating outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence in Jerusalem.

Footage of the demonstrations shows dozens of people – waving Israeli flags, chanting and playing musical instruments – peacefully protesting Netanyahu’s decision to remove Defence Minister Yoav Gallant from his position.
