The problem over on Naughty Dog was having a massive online TLoU game cancelled before even releasing, not those ports. Even so, they must be about to announce another big game, Naughty Dog makes some of the very most technically impressive games in the industry, and it does take a lot of time. Zelda took 6 years between BotW and TotK even and the main world is the same and lots of assets were reused. I think Nintendo can release games quickier because they also have smaller scope games and less capable hardware, and Sony should start making more games like Astro Bot as well, it may be getting out of hand, already did based on money investment and is may also based on time investment. |
Yes TotK taking so long despite the fact that its map is just an altered version of the BotW world plus they could obviously reuse a ton of assets and code from the first game is a perfect example of what's wrong in the industry. Though with that game I think they probably spent way too much time trying to perfect the impressive building mechanics in the game and if they scrapped that and made a brand new world the game probably still woulda come out sooner than it did.
Much more obvious examples are the lack of a new GTA and Elder Scrolls game for I can't even count how many years haha. As you point out, luckily for the most part Nintendo doesn't choose to go with the hyper-realistic look in their games so most of their games don't suffer from this dangerous path that other studios have gone down with their own AAA games. And of course with Switch being handheld (and just their general strategy since the Wii of not making super expensive high end systems) means that within each gen their games can get made faster and less costly than AAA games on other systems.
This makes it so Nintendo doesn't need to do the sort of re-releasing of already available games that Sony has to do. And agreed Sony should focus more on games like Astro Bot that don't take a decade to make so that they can start releasing more than a pitiful two games a year. Even as Switch 2 comes out next year, which presumably will be at least as capable as PS4, because of Nintendo's strategy of mostly not using a hyper-realistic art style their AAA games will continue to cost much less and be made much quicker than console AAA games, and thank Nintendo for that! Going forward, Zelda games are probably going to be the only Nintendo series that suffers from the problems that home console devs have, just because Zelda is now a huge open world series with crazy impressive physical systems now so those games are always gonna take an age to make.
Anyway, back to XCX...watching the Switch XCX trailer really made me want to try out this series! It is super cool that all four games will be available on Switch!
