Israeli air strikes target southern Beirut
Lebanon’s state media is reporting that at least two Israeli air strikes have hit the southern suburbs of Beirut.
The Israeli military had earlier issued new evacuation orders for those areas that have already been targeted multiple times.
Lebanese army can enforce ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel: PM Mikati
Lebanon’s caretaker PM Najib Mikati said the Lebanese army is prepared to bolster its presence in the south and enforce a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, provided it receives the necessary military equipment.
“The foundation for stability in the south is the full implementation of UN Resolution 1701,” he said.
He also said that conferences will be held in the next two weeks to rally support for the Lebanese army, and secure the equipment necessary for it to carry out its duties, including disarmament in the southern region.
“Lebanon’s primary concern is stability and the return of displaced people from the south to their homes,” Mikati said, adding that Lebanon would adhere to a ceasefire as soon as Israel commits to one.
“I didn’t decide to start the fire, but if a ceasefire is agreed upon, Lebanon will fully comply. No shots will be fired from the Lebanese side, and I pledge to uphold Resolution 1701.”
Nasrallah’s body to be buried when conditions allow, says Hezbollah official
Hassan Nasrallah’s body has remained in Lebanon and he will be laid to rest in Beirut’s southern suburbs when conditions allow, Mahmoud Qmati, a senior Hezbollah political official, told the Reuters news agency.
Qmati also said the group was now being jointly led until it could pick a new leader, which would take time.
“What’s important is that [a] joint command is in place,” he said. “The method of choosing a replacement for the secretary-general takes time and requires appropriate circumstances, and for that reason, we suffice today with temporary joint command.”
