I remember paying that much for PS2 at release, except it was in Guilders at the time. Actually with extra controller and game I payed 1,200 guilders at PS2 launch, which was 540 Euros, which would be 914 euros today. (CAD 1,371)

Inflation has been bad due to Covid, prices aren't going back, only further up.

Steamdeck 1 TB is CAD 819 (before tax)
PS5 Pro 2 TB will be CAD 960 (before tax)

At least people can't say a peripheral (PSVR2) is more expensive than the console anymore...

Anyway it is a premium console, which Sony doesn't expect to sell a lot like the PS4 Pro.
PS5 digital is still affordable CAD 580, PS5 standard is CAD 650, PSVR2 CAD 750, disc drive add-on is CAD 100.

We live in a world now where a burger from a shack along the road is CAD 11,50 (good burgers though)

$960 + $100 for the optical drive + tax.

$1000 for a console of any kind is madness (in Canada).

So is CAD 102 for a new game (after tax), or CAD 107 for a controller.

Now looking at a new gaming laptop, 32GB RAM, 1Tb SSD, 4070, CAD 2,700 (before tax)

Houses in my street are selling for CAD 1 million, and I live in a small town, an hour from Toronto. Crazy shit.

The PS4 launched here at CAD 400, but that was when the CAD was on par or even above USD for a while. (currently at 73 cents to the USD)
Game prices have gone from CAD 60 to CAD 90, console prices from CAD 400 to CAD 650.
My grocery bill has increased by a factor 1.5 as well (if not more)

But I did buy a ps4 pro for CAD 400 when it came out (CAD was above USD at the time, new games were briefly CAD 55)

Worst is ice cream. From CAD 0.40 for a soft serve cone in my youth (converted) to CAD 4.00 today.

Anyway it's gonna hurt to buy a PS5 Pro. But it will also be many hours of fun.
Yeah CAD 1,200 after tax ugh (with disc drive). Madness indeed.
