Israel has turned Hebron into a ‘large prison’, says mayor
The Israeli military has turned the city of Hebron and nearby towns in the southern occupied West Bank into what resembles a “large prison”, its mayor said.
Taysir Abu Sneineh was quoted as saying by Anadolu Agency the Israeli army “turned the city into something akin to a large prison and imposed a policy of collective punishment”.
Military checkpoints and iron gates have multiplied and the military closed all roads and entrances to cities and towns in the West Bank.
Medical teams were unable to transport patients by road, making it necessary to transfer patients onto another vehicle at checkpoints. The mayor said basic services like waste collection had been halted due to the closures.
“People want to live with their rights in security and safety; removing those rights could lead to an explosion,” Abu Sneineh warned.
Israeli forces have surrounded a house in the village of Hashimiya, west of Jenin in the occupied West Bank, Wafa news agency reported.
Head of the village council Nasr Jarar told Wafa that undercover Israeli special forces broke through the western entrance to the village and surrounded the house of Abdul Karim al-Baytawi.
Jarar said that Israeli snipers were also positioned on rooftops of houses adjacent to the al-Baytawi family’s house.
He added that sounds of gunfire and explosions were heard at the site.
Israeli forces are currently besieging three houses: one on Nablus Street in Jenin city, another in the al-Marah neighbourhood of the city, and a third in the town of al-Yamoun, west of Jenin.
