Both the PS1 and PS2 were plagued by the "Disc Read Error" ... With the original Playstation it was a much more progressive failure in that you typically would start getting the error, you could then flip the Playstation onto its back and eliminate the error but it would eventually return.
The high failure rate of the Playstation and PS2 can (probably) be seen at local garage sales ... You see tons of people selling Atari, Collecovisions, NES, Master System, SNES, Genesis, N64, Gamecube and XBox systems but (even though they sold far more systems) a working Playstation or PS2 is a very rare item.
