from the german article that i read about it it was more a technical study how much layers they really can put on a bd disk. I don't expect 16 layer bd's to come to mass market cause every layer increases failure rate more and more.
But it shows that it would be possible and shows that its likely that we might get 3 or 4 layer bd disks sometime in the future.
And yes there a lot of use for these amounts of data, just cause it has no real use in in home entertainment in the near future does not mean that it is useless. Data storage and backups would be good applications if they could make writable versions of these (but i guess data transfer rate would be too slow for this)
