My first experience was with Quake and what I learned from it was that I liked the genre... but I suffer from motion sickness 
. I still played it, but only in bursts of 30 minutes or so before having to take a rest. Not the best way to play it.
Things have improved with time, but it's on a game per game basis. For example, I played the new Wolfenstein games without a problem, but the demo of DOOM 2016 was very unpleasant. That's why I don't risk it and don't buy a game unless I've been able to try it with a demo or a free weekend.
