For the same reason you need an UbiConnect one to just play their games or a Xbox Live/PSN account to play MSoft/Sony games online. Because they want to tell their shareholders how well they're doing and how many accounts (active or not) they have.
It doesn't make much sense, but there's no other option if you want to play their games.
