Bolton advises that Putin is waiting to see how the 2024 presidential election plays out, as a Trump win will be very beneficial for Putin. Trump is already influencing politics by making the senate and congress not want to help ukraine. However, the financial maven and ubergenuis has indicated that he'll support a loan for ukraine so this may be the only aid that could be given if Trump wins.

I'm thinking that the various trials that Trump is facing will decide whether or not he will become the next president.
Anyway, here is bolton's take on this and he doesn't spell it all out like im doing.

If Trump wins, it won't be a ceasefire, Putin will try to take the entire country or at minimum, Kherson to Odessa and Kharkiv to Kyiv. If Biden wins and Dems retake House, it'll send a nasty message to Russia that America is back and will be supporting Ukraine for at least another 4 years.

Right now things are somewhere around a stalemate and a slight Russian advantage but neither is in a strong position. Russia is just better at manipulating people through threats which makes the West reluctant to do certain things out of fear of "escalation" but Ukraine won't surrender, with or without America's support, too many deaths, too much justified rage, Ukraine will despise Russia the next century, a ceasefire will not stop conflicts. Russia won't give up the territory they've taken, the only way is pushing Russia out of Ukraine.

But they need the USA for it.
