Three hurt by gunman in West Bank: Report

Three people have been injured, one severely, in clashes with a Palestinian gunman in the occupied West Bank, reports The Times of Israel, citing a hospital where the wounded were taken.

The Israeli military earlier said it was using a fighter jet and drone to pursue the gunman, who had first fired at an Israeli vehicle near the settlement of Dolev.

Palestinian killed in violent clashes near Ramallah

A Palestinian has been killed and at least seven Israeli soldiers have been injured in clashes near the West Bank village of Deir Bzayeh, west of Ramallah. The clashes erupted after a bus was shot at near the settlement of Dolev, the Israeli army said, causing no injuries to the Israeli settlers onboard.

The confrontation lasted more than four hours after the military was deployed to the scene. One Palestinian was killed by a rocket-propelled grenade.

Al Jazeera correspondents reported hearing the sound of explosions as well as that of gunfire.

West Bank gunman hit by Israeli rocket after hours-long standoff: Witnesses

It started at about 5:30am local time (03:30 GMT) near Ramallah. A Palestinian man wielding a gun went to a junction below one of the illegal Israeli settlements in the area and started firing towards a bus. There were no injuries from that attack. The gunman then hid on a mountainside amid the trees, where he stayed for about five hours.

The Israeli military then completely blocked the Palestinian roads all the way around the area. When we arrived here, a security expert pointed out an Apache helicopter above – it fired three rockets towards where this man was located.

Locals tell us the second one hit him. We saw the man being carried out on a stretcher from the mountainside.

Since then, we’ve seen at least 10 more military vehicles entering one of the villages behind us. In the last half an hour, a drone carrying tear gas fired towards us. We were clearly showing our press vests and it was right above us. We were hit by some of the tear gas.

Israel claims another 2,000 acres in Jordan Valley, announces settlement plans: Report

Israel has claimed 8,000 dunams (1,977 acres, 800 hectares) of land in the Jordan Valley, paving the way for new development projects, Israel’s Kan broadcaster reports. There are plans to develop hundreds of housing units in the area, which is located near the Israeli settlement of Yafit, as well as a business and industrial district, according to the broadcaster.

Israel’s far-right Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, who oversaw the settlement expansion move, said it was an “important and strategic issue”.

“While there are those in Israel and the world who seek to undermine our right to Judea and Samaria and the country in general, we promote the settlement movement with hard work and in a strategic manner across the country,” said Smotrich in comments carried by The Times of Israel.

Israel has taken thousands of Palestinians captive since Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7. In the process, Israeli authorities have become increasingly violent, often storming homes inside the occupied West Bank and beating everyone inside, according to a staff member of the Palestinian monitor Addameer.

Once in custody, Palestinians face even more abuse. “Lots of people had their [sternum] or heads broken, often gushing with blood,” 54-year-old Matar told Al Jazeera three months after he was released from detention.

“We weren’t even treated like animals. At least animals are treated with some sort of dignity.”
