What I loved watching during the 7th gen was Xbox 360 vs Playstation 3 gamers screaming at each other saying their game has better graphics... Like somehow 720P and lower and 30fps and lower was something to be proud of.

But it really took off with Crysis, it probably put the PC visually a generation ahead of the 7th gen consoles.

...But even when we go back to the early FPS years with Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 Arena, PC gaming was seen as the "superior" platform with crisp visuals, silky smooth framerates and a responsive input method.
