Think Xbox is really probably positioning itself to not directly compete with PS next gen. They'll have the handheld which will probably replace the Series S, I think it will likely be dockable. But then the high end console will probably be like launching a pro console at the start of the gen and leapfrog the next PS.
This is not to say Xbox will outsell PS, of course not, it won't come close, but it's more than Xbox will try to make itself enticing in other ways than "like PlayStation but green" where they'll be three different market catering devices, Xbox Handheld, PS6 and Super Xbox.
Depends what PS does though! They could also plan a super console 
But I think it would be a smart way to move Xbox away from a direct competitor to PlayStation, it would make it stand out differently from PlayStation.
