PlayStation's recent financial report is really telling, despite pulling in record revenues, it sounds like the rest is negative news.

I think the damage Jim Ryan did with his GaaS plans is starting to hurt. No major release in the coming financial year? No wonder they moneyhatted some stuff, but had it to be Foamstars? They really need these Xbox titles propping up their library.

Counterpoint, Sony needs those GAAS titles on profit margins this slim, those massive Hollywood blockbuster photorealistic titles they do have small profit margins and no recurring revenue, Sony needs a few successful GAAS titles which will improve their profit margins, Helldivers II has been a big success on Steam/PlayStation and if they provide good support, will provide good profits to Sony on a recurring basis.

Add on Bungie, plus other GAAS titles, unfortunately some will flop because they're coming to the game too late, but even if most of them flopped but they had like, 2-3 really successful, huge GAAS titles, I think they'd be happy with that, Microsoft already has Minecraft, CoD, Sea of Thieves and many other GAAS titles so they don't need to go so hard but those titles will help prop up the MS Gaming business.

And AAA development is getting longer and longer, these GAAS help to fill revenue/profit gaps where there's no major releases. Even if Sony didn't have any GAAS in development, they'd still have moments where they'd have a year light on releases, then without the GAAS backing them up, things would be even more dire.
