It was a two-fold double cold offering from the execs, mainly because the staff knew they were being bought out to abandon their ties and friendship, but at the same time, they likely knew the 50% increase wouldn't have mattered, because Activision could just fire and replace them within the following years, making that concession meaningless.
I can see why they were angry and rightly so. The offer would have been a temporary one with Activision's known history of just laying off staff, as well as driving them out.
Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.
