Machiavellian said: I actually disagree that its mainly the US keeping the world divided. The world actually do not like the US as much as Americans like to believe. What is keeping the world divided is that different countries have different interest in the region but no specific country really cares about the Palestinians. As you stated, its going to have to be people within Israel that make a real change towards peace for any real traction to happen between the 2 groups. Yes the US can assist with the move but its the people in Israel holding their government accountable that will be the major shift not externals forces. The thing is there also need to be a shift within the Palestinians as well. They need to find someone to really petition not only people within Israel but also Hamas to cease any action. As long as Hamas continue their action, Israel will always use them as an excuse to continue what they are doing. |
Hamas is not in the West Bank though... Israel isn't using Hamas as an excuse for the ongoing oppression of the West Bank for the past 50 years. They are now using Hamas to dehumanize all Palestinians and in that way green lighting more Settler violence in the West Bank.
Hamas has been reacting to the ongoing Settler violence, apartheid and ongoing oppression of and illegal detainment of Palestinians in the West Bank. Their demands are to release all Palestinian prisoners, many of which have never even been formally charged. Hamas is also against the total blockade of Gaza, Israel controlling everything and everyone that goes in and out and not having any self determination of their economy.
As long as the oppression and apartheid continues, there will always be push back. And it will always be easy for another 'party' like Hamas to gain power.
138 of the 193 UN members have recognized the State of Palestine. I wouldn't call that no countries caring about the Palestinians.

(Israel is recognized by 163 countries https://www.visualcapitalist.com/recognition-of-israel-map/ )
But true, hardly any 'Western' countries' governments give a crap about Palestinians.
The US keeps the world divided since countries don't want to go against the US. At least here in Canada that is pretty clear, too much to lose by angering the US. So yes it's out of self interest to follow the US' lead or not make too many waves. (Canada did finally switch their vote against a ceasefire in December)
It's also true that 'the world actually do not like the US as much as Americans like to believe'. Yet those are the people, not the governments.
The US has military bases in at least 80 counties

As of September 2022, there are 171,736 active-duty military troops across 178 countries, with the most in Japan (53,973), Germany (35,781), and South Korea (25,372). These three countries also have the most U.S. military bases – 120, 119, and 73, respectively.
There are around 750 U.S. military bases in at least 80 countries, though Al Jazeera says the number “may be even higher as not all data is published by the Pentagon.”
Who can the Palestinians petition for change?
