They cannot keep up with Microsoft, they are already laying off people within their own studios and closed one of their small studios. PlayStation has pretty much reached its maximum organisational size. I can see MS trying to by Take2 after GTA6 is released. As long as there are bigger fish in the gaming market MS should be able to buy more publishers. |
This is an incredibly simplistic take.
Laying off employees doesn't prevent a company from acquiring. MS laid off something like 16,000 employees last year, despite acquiring a publisher for $70 billion with something like ~17,000 people. By your argument, MS has reached it's maximum size too, and couldn't possibly acquire Take Two.
It is unfortunately not unusual to cut spending in one area to make room for other spending.
It is also not unusual to cut particular areas of the company, even when the overall company is doing fine. Cut the low performers, also cut the high performers that cost more than they're worth. Unfortunately nothing unusual about that.
In the Insomniac leak, Sony seems pretty cognizant of the fact that they need to work on their development pipeline.
