The issue I have with Advertisements is they have typically been vectors to disseminate viruses and maleware... Back in the Windows 2000/XP days, I saw a corresponding decrease in viruses and maleware once I started to Ad-block.
Even credible sites like Anandtech had issues where they infected thousands of users due to a rogue advert.

Probably less common today, but I rather not go through hours of cleaning out a device because a company wanted to push an advert I don't care about down my neck.

The secondary effect is that on a mobile device, adverts actually decrease battery life due to the extra CPU, GPU and Ram usage, plus Wifi/Cellular bandwidth required.

The third effect is that some advertisements collect device and user data and sell them, profiting off our information.

I just don't see the benefit to the consumer, other than to keep supporting these companies so they can keep providing content.
