We can't forget either that Youtube video production values have been increasing year-on-year since the platform launched... Which does cost money and requires extra staffing.
Linus Tech Tips is probably a perfect example of this, started off with just him, then a few more people, now it's a full media business... Adverts alone couldn't support that growth.
In saying that, what I find frustrating is when companies like Nintendo or nVidia "blacklist" Youtubers because they didn't shine their products in the absolute perfect light, it's basically blackmail, some Youtube channels are happy to use their own coin to get a hold of the hardware, but it does mean they often release their videos with a delay... And that means they don't get as many click and probably less revenue.
So sponsorships can skew results for some less-candid youtube channels.
