I don't think there was ever a risk of ND being a MP dev. They've been doing MP for a long time but their narrative SP games are what the team culture pushes.

Having an existing live-service title I think would be a boon for any dev to have alongside what they are working on. But, on the other hand, they can now focus on what they excel at.

Speculation still points towards TloU3, a new IP and helping with a new UC, which is all good news!

I mean they said it themselves-

"To release and support The Last of Us Online we'd have to put all our studio resources behind supporting post launch content for years to come, severely impacting development on future single-player games. So, we had two paths in front of us: become a solely live service games studio or continue to focus on single-player narrative games that have defined Naughty Dog's heritage."

They would basically need to dedicate most (if not all) of their whole resources to TLOU Online and keep it running. Other projects would need to be put on the side lines. What I think happened is that they went well in over their heads with the scope and didn't know what they were getting themselves into.

Live service games need a lot of attention to keep players going and a lot of resource dedicated towards that. We basically see it with Activision Blizzard, Rockstar, Bungie and their games like CoD Warzone, World of Warcraft, GTA Online and Destiny requiring hundreds to thousands of developers working on it constantly year in year out. To churn out new content every few months for engagement. For a developer who hasn't had any experience in that and jump in wasn't a very good idea to be blunt and thats putting it lightly. And they should've stuck to what they were good at which is make brilliant generation defining single player games and perhaps maybe have a stab a multiplayer game on the side.

Years wasted. Live and learn I guess. Hopefully we'll get at least one new ND game to play this generation xP

My intention is not to act like ND are lying. I don't think this would've happened but if they say it was then sure ok.

It def seems like they bit more than they can chew and I think that's fine. Devs should be given the opportunity to explore new avenues: that's how they can grow into something more than they are. Kind of reminds me of Aspyr and the KOTOR remake: too bad they couldn't make it a reality.
