Appart from a big maybe on GTA V. I'd be happy to hear which game adopt a strong vertical design in their open world prior to the XCX and BOTW.

Even GTA V is more of a PS2 open-world game with random invisible walls and it's not the same dynamic as getting in a plane vs a Skell.  Also as we know XBX had natural geometry platforming and the verticality was rewarded with certain caves you could only access with a skell. Bosses only could reach by flight. You can really see the blueprints of BOTW taking shape
