This video is gold

I find it kind of ironic how people gave Steam shit for years for asset flip games and other garbage. Epic came out claiming they wouldn't allow low tier garbage on their platform, yet not even a full 3 years later they opened their floodgates and now we're seeing NFT/crypto garbage and since they are pushing their Unreal creation tools, ppl are just going to pile more and more crap onto their platform, and they don't care to filter any of it.

It's so weird to see a CEO choosing to take the complete opposite approach as another, thinking their route is the best to take, and yet it's become the worst path to take.

I think EGS in some ways had good ideas but was poorly executed by Timmy and his dumb hubris. At the time, it did feel like Valve was slacking a bit when it came to Steam updates so them taking 30% cut did feel like a bit meh. So the idea that EGS would take a significantly lower cut while providing good enough launcher was fair enough. But then they went the bullshit exclusivity route along with a whole bunch of social media disasters from Timmy not to mention the history of Epic games and their treatment of the PC platform during the "dark" era. On top of that, UE was becoming an engine with increasing bad ports with tons of stuttering as more and more games came out.

But the killing blow is that EGS did light maybe not a fire but more of a warning shot against Valve that they can't really laurels forever even if EGS wasn't strong enough to take them down. Since then Steam has been updating the store/launcher quite frequently with new stuff once or twice a year. And of course, they also came out with the Steam Deck which really solidified their positioning as the defacto store front on PC along with Geforce Now integration. Because if you want to use some other launcher on PC, you will be missing out on quite a lot of features that Steam has along with the ability to play on Steam Deck without some hackery. It's kind of like the Nvidia advantage but for free when it comes to using Steam.

It's like, yes Timmy, pc gamers don't like monopolies but you aren't gonna win over any of them by doing monopolistic nonsense such as paying developers for exclusivity agreements. If you want to topple Valve, you need to win by providing a better experience and feature sets. Not by paying developers to exclude their games from Steam for a limited amount of time since if there is one thing PC gamers are, is they are patient.
