1998, Game of the Year

The best ever year for video games, in my mind. Especially with SoulCalibur sneaking in due to the Japanese release date.

I have so many 1998 games on my top 50 list, but the winner for me has to be StarCraft. Just a perfectly-constructed strategy game with stellar production values, absorbing storytelling, and riveting tactical gameplay.
