You need to clear up some side slots for more engines. That's how I've compensated for my early custom cargo hauler. Has pretty much the same weapon and engines as the Frontier, but more hull, shit load more fuel and about 1150 mass. When I added the Payload skill bonus through Sam, I was able to just squeek in the full 2000 copper needed for the first Deimos Shipyard quest.
Also as important I was able to add both a science development and weapon development hub. FYI I comandeered and modified a random Ecliptic Stiletto that landed on one of my moon mining outposts, after about a dozen of those bastards jumped me in the middle of building.
It's good for now but I'm saving up to move to a class B ship asap.
