Although I think LO and BD and great JRPGs, some people do have the Gooch's rose-tinted glasses when they pour accolades at them. The games have very old concepts and gameplay and has been sugarcoated with the big individuals behind them. The whole development team behind it has to be great and experienced, not just the leader. Thats why I think the upcoming 360 JRPGs will be much less 'debatable' as you say. They are from big name teams like Namco, Tri-Ace who have more collective experience at making a good JRPG. |
By debatable I mean the general consensus about the game. Lost Odyssey runs the gamut in terms of opinion, even more so with Blue Dragon. Whereas Final Fantasy garners Universal appraise, with a lot less dissension amongst critics.
So if Lost Odyssey had an average of 90+, or even 95, mix that in with it's more accessible visual style and you would see the Hardcore JRPG crowd buy a 360 in droves. Instead Lost Odyssey averages between 78 - 80 with scores ranging from 9.6/10 to 5/10. So people will be apprehensive in buying a 360 for a "debatable" game.
Although I do find that those who hate Final Fantasy, hate it a lot.
