Well, we already do have something to off of. Quake 1 remastered was announced/released at Quakecon 2021. It was a straight remaster though. It looked like todays "boomer shooters" with cleaner textures, higher resolution and framerates, modern controls, and additional content. But the game still looked like it was from 1996 
so you have to figure that trend will continue with Quake 2 remastered.
