Tetris (Gameboy) was maybe the first game I ever played along with Marble Madness, but also one of the worst games of all time. It's not even an average game, but a terrible game and so overrated. I played several versions and none do anything to make it interesting. It's one of those nostalgia games that doesn't hold up in any way, but people like because it's a "classic" although I think it was never good. Even as far as puzzle games go, it's just way too simple and boring. Tetris Effect's high metacritic score is mind boggling. There's countless games I think are overrated and don't care for, but it's like comparing not liking Magic the Gathering to not liking Tic Tac Toe. |
People love Tetris because they find it fun. I've played the Gameboy version on NSO, various modes in Tetris 99, Tetris Effect and Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 and it's always fun to me. Put in like 200 hours into these different Tetris games and Switch alone.
The Gameboy at it's launch was heavily carried by Tetris. It was huge as fuck. It sold over 30mil copies on the GB and another 7mil+ on NES.
It's not even that simple. A lot of strategy goes into it the faster it goes. That's what makes it exciting. It's not just considered a classic because of nostalgia (I never had any nostalgia for any of it, having only played it for the first time in 2019), it was considered a classic right from the get go in the 80s. It's literally considered to be timeless by many.
