Definitely showing Western game character design influence. Keep in mind that the original character designs were Japan centric even though Redfield was still a "tank" character by their standards.
Having a more physically imposing protagonist may well mean that the game designers plan on nullifying that advantage by overwhelming him with literal mobs of enemies.
