Doesn't Sony own the film rights to Spider-man while Disney owns the merchandise rights?  I'm assuming that made it easy to get the ip for gaming.

Sony only owns the film rights, Disney own basically everything else, from the character itself, to the merchandise, to the videogame rights and I believe they share certain TV Show rights (or own them outright).

And even at that, I think Sony's film rights are only a license which is renewed every certain amount of years.
