Well, in my case it is strictly matter of genre - I played lot of RTS games in those days, and Warcraft was, and still is, RTS game for me. I didn't care much for, then announced, Warcraft P&C Adventure (though that is one of my favourite genres) and I didn't care for WoW since I don't care for MMORPGs.

Lore was, honestly, completely irrelevant for me while playing Warcraft 1-3. And I like to dive into lore when I play RPGs, but I never cared for that in RTS games (well, except for AoE, with that nice excerpts from Earth's history).

From my end, I really got into the lore within certain RTS games, primarily when it came to C&C, Warcraft and Starcraft, since those game universes had abundant amounts of lore for them (And Age of Empires for history buffs that want it).

Don't get me wrong, I still love gameplay as much as anyone, but whenever I play a game that's trying to tell me a story, I'm most likely to try getting into it, rather than seeing it as window dressing and focussing purely on gameplay.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.
